Fresh elections if NOTA gets maximum votes: Maharashtra Poll Panel

Maharashtra Election Commission on NOTA Maximum Votes

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Election Commission (MSEC) on Tuesday ruled that should NOTA ever get the maximum number of votes in an election, then none of the contesting candidates will be declared as elected and fresh elections would be held.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission (MSEC), which supervises elections to panchayats and municipalities in the state, has ruled that the order will be applicable to polls and bypolls to all municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats, with immediate effect, according to The Indian Express.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission (MSEC) ruling came ahead of the Municipal Corporation eletcions in Ahmednagar and Dhule – two major cities of the state. The state panel had earlier announced that the civic elections in the two cities will be held on December 09, 2018.

The term of both the corporations ends on December 29.

Voters in Ahmednagar and Dhule can create history as they will be the first to benefit from the Maharashtra State Election Commission’s decision to hold fresh elections if NOTA – None of The Above, gets most of the votes.

The Maharashtra State Election Commission’s landmark decision comes five years after the Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission (EC) to introduce a ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) button on all electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Among the various demands to reform the election system in India, voters have also been calling for “Recall A Candidate” option if h/she does not perform and fulfill promises after winning the elections.
