Muslim reservation echoed in Maharashtra assembly

Mumbai: Following the successful campaign for reservation by Maratha community, now, the Muslim community is also demanding reservation in education and government jobs. The issue was echoed in Maharashtra assembly on Tuesday. Opposition parties including Congress, NCP, Samajwadi Party and All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen created a huge ruckus in Maharashtra assembly on the issue of Muslim reservation.

While opposition MLAs shouted slogans against the government, few Congress MLAs even took the “Mace’ in their hands. The proceedings of the house were adjourned thrice by the Speaker.

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi threatened that they will not allow the assembly to run if the government does not give reservation to Muslims. He said the reservation is the right of the poor people of the Muslim community.

Taking a tough stand AIMIM MLAs asked the government why it is not giving reservation to poor people of the Muslim community, although the Bombay High Court has not stayed the 5% reservation for Muslim students.

It must be noted that former Congress-NCP government had given 5% reservation to the Muslims but later this order of the government was challenged in the Bombay High Court.
