The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is, on Wednesday, carried out searches at approximately 25 locations in the states of Karnataka, Kerala, and Bihar. These searches were conducted in relation to the Phulwarisharif case, which involves the Popular Front of India (PFI). The raids were conducted in various districts, including Belthangady, Puttur, and Bantwal, with the assistance of the local police.
According to a spokesperson, searches were carried out at the residences of the individuals in different districts across Bihar, Karnataka, and Kerala. These districts include Katihar in Bihar, Dakshina Kannada and Shimoga in Karnataka, and Kasaragod, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.
The spokesperson stated that a variety of electronic devices such as mobile phones, hard disks, SIM cards, pen drives, and data cards, along with other pieces of evidence and materials associated with the prohibited organization, were confiscated during the raids.
The federal agency has also seized Rs 17.50 lakh cash during the operation, the official said.
In Karnataka, a series of coordinated raids were conducted by the agency at 16 locations in the Dakshina Kannada district. According to sources, the searches took place in Bantwal, Uppinangady, Venur, and Belthangady.
Similarly, in Bihar, the NIA carried out searches at the residence of Mahboob Alam in Mujzaffar Tola, Katihar. During the operation, the agency also questioned some of Alam’s relatives, with assistance from the district police.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a total of 85 locations have been raided thus far.
In July of the previous year, based on a tip-off, the Bihar police conducted a raid at Athar Parvez’s rented residence in Phulwari Sharief, Patna. During the raid, incriminating evidence related to the PFI, including a document titled “India 2047 Towards Rule of Islamic India, Internal Document: Not for circulation,” was seized.
Subsequently, Parvez, along with three other accused individuals named Md Jalaluddin Khan, Arman Malick (also known as “Imteyaz Anwer”), and Nooruddin Zangi (also known as “Advocate Nooruddin”), was arrested. The NIA filed a chargesheet against them on January 7.
In connection with this case, ten additional individuals were arrested for promoting the unlawful and anti-national activities of the PFI, as well as facilitating “the illegal transfer of funds from overseas to its members.”
During its investigation, the NIA discovered that several individuals suspected of being associated with the PFI were operating multiple channels on popular video platforms. These channels were disseminating content aimed at “inciting communal violence and terror in India.”
The suspects, who have international connections, were also using social media to propagate the ideology of the PFI, according to the NIA.
