AMU, Jamia Hamdard among 19 more shortlised as Institutions of Eminence

New Delhi: An Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) constituted by the Narendra Modi Government in New Delhi has recommended selection of 19 more institutions, including Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Jamdard New Delhi, as Institutions of Eminence (IoEs).

The Government and the University Grants Commission (UGC) had earlier jointly approved a scheme of providing Regulatory Architecture for setting up and upgrading of 20 Institutions (10 from public sector & 10 from private sector) as world class teaching and research institutions called as ‘Institutions of Eminence’.

The Regulatory Architecture has been provided in the form of UGC (Declaration of Government Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017 for public Institutions and UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017 for private Institutions.

“Under this scheme, 114 applications (74 from public sector and 40 from private sector) were received in the Ministry for selection of IoEs”, the HRD Ministry said.

The Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) had in July announced the selection of 06 institute for the status – 03 from public sector and 03 from private sector. The announcement however created uproar because of the inclusion in the list of Reliance Foundation’s Jio Institute – which is yet to be established.

Probably to balance the inclusion of still to be born Jio Institute in the list, the government has included two more greenfield or yet to be set up institutes Bharti Airtel group-backed Satya Bharti Foundation and Krea University.

Besides Jamia Hamdard, other private universities in the list are Vellore Institute of Technology, Amrita Vidyapeeth, Indian Institute of Human Settlement and Institute of Public Health Sciences.

Among the Central Universities along with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are Banaras Hindu University, Tezpur University and the University of Hyderabad besides two state universities- Andhra University and Savitribai Phule Pune University. Panjab University which enjoys a special status has also been accorded the Institute of Eminence status.
