Bangladesh post turmoil: The Islamic Approach

Promoting peace and discouraging violence, especially against the State and minorities, is a fundamental and inviolable aspect of Islam. There are numerous references from Islamic scriptures emphasizing the importance of maintaining order and justice within society. Detesting violence or anarchy, Prophet Muhammad always advocated for resolving disputes and injustices through dialogue and peaceful means. For any Muslim, taking the law into one’s own hands and engaging in violent uprisings contradicts the principles of Islam. Now that the demands of the students have been met and the Government led by Sheikh Hasina has been overthrown, it is crucial for the students and the general population to focus on restoring normalcy. Students should return to their studies and contribute to rebuilding and stabilizing the nation.

Islam encourages peaceful and constructive dialogue as a means of addressing grievances. Peaceful protests are preferred as they align with Islamic values of non-violence and respect for law and order. The student protests in Bangladesh, which began peacefully, exemplify the potential for non-violent movements to bring about change. It is imperative to remember that Islam calls for patience, restraint, and peaceful resolution of conflicts. While the revolution aimed to address genuine grievances through peaceful protests, at later stage it was joined by some radical elements. Some sections of these groups are trying to exploit the current situation to assert their political agendas, which has led to increased violence, especially against minority communities.

As a Muslim-majority nation, Bangladesh has a responsibility to protect its Hindu and other minority populations. Islam teaches the protection and fair treatment of minorities. Ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation, is essential for fostering a peaceful and inclusive society. This is particularly important to demonstrate that Islam truly means peace and to safeguard the interests of minorities, not only within Bangladesh but also to promote harmony with neighbouring countries like India. Amidst the turmoil, there have been commendable efforts by Muslims to protect Hindu temples and places of worship. These actions highlight the desire of most people to avoid violence and protect their fellow citizens. At times, the attacks on Hindus are also driven by historical grievances and opportunistic motives during times of lawlessness. Ensuring the safety of all communities is critical to maintaining peace and stability in Bangladesh.

Islam does not condone violence against the state or any community. The preference for peaceful protests aligns with Islamic teachings, and now that demands have been met, it is crucial for students and citizens to focus on returning to normalcy. After all, Education and constructive engagement are vital for the progress of any society. Protecting minorities is not only an Islamic duty but also essential for promoting peace and safeguarding the interests of minorities in neighbouring countries. In these challenging times, upholding the principles of Islam and ensuring justice and protection for all citizens is paramount.
