Featured Dalit and Muslim orgs called for Bharat Bandh today to protest against CAA, NRC, NPR

New Delhi, Jan 29:Many Dalit and Muslim organizations has called for has called for a complete shutdown on January 29th, 2020 to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

The Bahujan Kranti Morcha (BKM) led demanded DNA-based NRC. Meshram also said that polls should be conducted using paper ballot instead of EVM (electronic voting machines).

Prominent Islamic scholar and champion of Dalit – Muslim unity Maulana Sajjad Nomani along with Waman Meshram in a video message appealed the people to make the Bandh success.

Both leaders also demanded implementation of DNA based NRC across the country.

On the other hand, after the Supreme court refused to grant any stay on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), without hearing the Center, the women of Shaheen Bagh have called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh on January 29th, 2020 against the CAA, NRC and NPR.

The apex court refused to grant an interim stay on controversial CAA, NRC and NPR without hearing the Centre and the government is free to implement those laws.

The apex court directed the Centre to file replies against over 140 writ petitions (except those about Assam and Tripura) within four weeks. The bench comprising Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justices Abdul Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna also agreed to consider the petitions from Assam and Tripura separately.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who came to India on or before December 31st, 2014.

Massive protests broke out in the country soon after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in both the houses of the parliament. Those protesting against the law say that the Act is discriminatory and creates a divide on the basis of religion.
