If You Are Silent About Charlottesville, I’m Calling You Out

To my friends who continue to remain silent over xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia and particularly racism in light of recent events (i.e. this “Unite the White” rally), I see you. Your reticence and neutrality show carelessness and, frankly, an opposition to human equality, decency and justice.

To my friends that have a brief idea about what is happening around the globe, yet decide to avoid it or focus their energy on school/work/any other mode of distraction, I urge you to continue staying aware and informed. School/work/etc. will always come to an end unlike the permanent effects of passively allowing hatred and injustice to grow.

While I understand that being constantly aware of said situations is daunting and overwhelming, it is critical for some of us to recognize and acknowledge our privilege. Although some of these global issues may not seem to directly impact or harm us (for now), please remember that some individuals do not have the freedom to turn a blind eye. For some, these problems are dangerously evident and undeniably existent.

Sure, take the time to process and de-stress from current news. Inform yourself in small increments with caution, if needed. I understand the want to live your life care- and worry-free when you are not in immediate danger/being targeted by injustice. Just understand that there are groups of people that do not get the opportunity to take respite.

For those of you that claim to care for humanity and enter fields of study to “help people” yet, ironically, are okay with neglecting and disregarding the trauma, terror and violence individuals are currently experiencing around you, I implore you to reassess your understanding of altruism.

I am frustrated with the lack of both self-education and public concern regarding said matters.

If you feel you aren’t doing enough and would like to be more active in an effort to help reduce injustice around us, reach out to local/national/global organizations to be briefed on how you may assist them. Donate to causes and teams actively working to ensure safety/space/legal services/etc. to those in need.

If you feel misinformed/uneducated on any issue, I encourage you to educate yourself. Ask questions. Check sources. Share (real, cited, and confirmed) news.

It’s time for us to stop ignoring the world and sheltering ourselves from the news for our comfort. Check your privilege. Stay informed. Educate yourself. Call out injustice.
