Jihad: Not synonym for combat but strive for objective

Contrary to misinterpretation of ‘Jihad’ by radicals/terrorists for personal ends and a misconception by vested interests, Jihad is not a synonym for combat. In Arabic language, the word Jihad means to strive and exert your utmost effort to achieve any given objective. According to Muslim scholars, in Islam, Jihad can be classified into several realms Jihad by the heart, tongue, hand and finally by the sword against aggressors/oppressors. In fact, Islam prohibits religious persecution rather provide protection to followers of other religions, thus ensures grand human rights charter.

Islam not only forbids killing of a human being (Al-Qur’an 17:33, 6:152) but also defines the gravity of this crime by calling it akin to kill the whole humanity (Al-Qur’an 5:32). It is deplorable fact that a section of Ulema and scholars are contributing to the flawed perception of Jihad either due to their ignorance/limited knowledge or on the behest of radical/terrorist organizations.

Even during conflicts, Islam prescribes: never – go beyond the limits; destroy properties including places of worship, target children/ women/old, cut green/fruit bearing trees etc. Not a single instance could be quoted from Islamic history about the violation of any of the above terms during the Prophet’s era. Islam also stands for peace and justice which is established from Quranic verses: ‘It is ordained to believers to stick to justice even if it goes against them (Al-Quran 4:135). At one place, it is commanded that ‘do not allow your hatred for others make you swerve to wrongdoing and turn you away from justice.’ (Quran 5:8).

Thus, the right interpretation of ‘Jihad’ is a war against inner evils as well as an effort/commitment towards peace, justice and harmony.
