Moulana Hasrat Mohani: The coiner of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’

Moulana Hasrat Mohani, who became immortal in the history of Independence movement by coining the slogan of masses, ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, in 1878 in U.P. His birth name was Syed Faz-ul-Hasan, who used to write Urdu poems under the pen name ‘Hasrat’, and belonged to a small place ‘Mohana’, thus was known as Hasrat Mohani. During his editorship of ‘Urdu-e-Muallah magazine, he along with his wife Nishatunnisa Begum came in contact with leading revolutionaries i.e. Arurabindo Ghosh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and subsequently joined the independence movement.

He was arrested / incarcerated being accused of treason for writing anti – British articles in 1909, besides impounding of his books by the Government. The couple started the first Swadeshi store along with his wife to support / fund the national movement. They also participated in Khilafat, Non-violence movements’ besides, vociferously voiced for total independence. In 1928, they parted way from Congress due to ideological differences and opposed the division of the country on religious lines. After independence he remained committed to socialism , secularism and interfaith harmony. He also remained member of Parliament Post-independence. Maulana Hasrat Mohani, the coiner of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ who continuously raised voice for the common man, passed away on 13th May, 1951 at Lucknow.
