New Delhi: National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Ghaiyurul Hassan Rizvi today said he would take up the issue of pending salary of nearly 50,000 madrasa teachers who have not been paid for the last 30 months.

“I will write to the HRD Ministry and also meet Mr Prakash Javdekar personally to address the issue of pending salary of madrasa teachers,” Rizwi told reporters after meeting a delegation of madrasa teachers from UP at his CGO Complex office.

Some 2000 madrasa teachers from UP protested at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the occasion of teachers day.

As per the Centrally funded scheme to modernize the madrasas across the country, the teachers who teach modern subjects like English, math etc are paid Rs.14,000 per month by the HRD Ministry.

Chaman Kamal, a madrasa teacher from Barriely, said – Central govt is not releasing funds to disburse our salaries. We are surviving in a very difficult situation.”

“If the govt wants to modernize the madarasa then teachers should be paid their due salary.”

The delegation of madarasa teachers met the NCM Chairman and sought his intervention in this regard.

There are nearly 25,000 such teachers in UP and other 25,000 in other states spread all over India. The previous UPA government had brought this scheme to bring madrasa teachers in mainstream. The teachers were then hired to give modern education. But they are not being paid due to budget constraints.

The delegation also met Union HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar later in the day who promised to take up this issue in a meeting lated for September 10.
