And when you see those who trifle with our signs then turn thou away from them until then engage in a discourse other than that and if Satan cause thee to forget then sit not, after recollection, with the unjust people. (Ch.6: V.69)
No punishment is prescribed in the Holy Quran, or in any of the authentic traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for blasphemy. Islam says that If somebody uses foul language against any holy person or teaching, Islam advises to keep away from such people as stated in the above verse of the Quran. The purpose of any religion is to spread peace, tolerance and mutual understanding with Islam being its torch bearer. However, the meaning of Islam—submission to the will of God—has been steadily corrupted by a handful of misguided radical elements from within the community. Instead of spreading peace, the religion has been abused by fanatics and made an excuse for violence and the spread of terror, both inside and outside the faith with recent Paris attacks bearing a witness to it.
Abdullah bin Ubayyee (Chief of the hypocrites) continuously abused the Prophet(PBUH), and opposed him severely in Madinah. When he passed away, the Prophet(PBUH) stood to offer his funeral prayers but was asked by one of his companions, “O Allah’s Apostle! Do you offer the prayer for this man although he said so-and-so on such-and-such-a day?” and “that he is a hypocrite!”. The Prophet(PBUH) ignored his statements and continued to offer the funeral prayers of the dead man. (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 192).
The above example along with numerous other examples prove that Prophet Muhammad never ordered any punishment for anyone who insulted or abused him. Prophet Muhammad always forgave people in spite of facing innumerable atrocities and remained compassionate towards them. Instead of declaring them blasphemous, he showed so much love towards them that a majority of them understood the true value of Islam and accepted it with their heart. Would they or their tribe members have done the same if Prophet reacted violently?
The future of mankind depends on the intrinsic values of love, tolerance, and freedom of conscience and of belief. A mutual approach based of inter religious understanding is the key to the future of the mankind. Lets not destroy it by fanning hatred & communally hurting sentiments.
