The Celebrity Apprentice: The White House Edition

In what seems to be an episode of “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Trump’s White House seems to be facing constant instability. The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, first resigned on July 21 after it was confirmed that the New York hedge fund magnate, Anthony Scaramucci, also knows as “The Mooch,” was hired as the new White House communications director.

Scaramucci made headlines after he made allegations and comments against other White House officials, including White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. He compared Priebus and himself to Cain and Abel, a story about two brothers in a biblical rivalry on Thursday morning. He even hinted at possibly getting Priebus fired.

Reince Priebus resigned on Thursday as chief of staff and President Trump quickly replaced him with the former Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly. The announcement came via Twitter from Trump at 5 p.m., right after he spoke at an event in Long Island.

There was talk that Priebus, the Washington insider, would soon be removed as Trump didn’t believe Priebus could control a White House that was chaotic and divided. This ousting makes Priebus the shortest serving chief of staff in United States’ history, according to David Cohen, a professor at the University of Akron.

However, the removal was anticipated by some when the new White House Press Secretary Anthony Scarammuci called Priebus a “paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac” in an interview with The New Yorker Post on Thursday evening. President Trump did not offer public support to Priebus amid the accusation.

It seemed Priebus never won the full trust of the president, as senior advisors like Jared and Ivanka Kushner reported directly to Trump and not Priebus, making this entire situation an unusual one considering the power dynamic of the White House (individuals usually report to the chief of staff before approaching the president). Even more unusual is that individuals close to Priebus denied any such resignation on Friday. But in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday evening, Priebus said he had resigned privately on Thursday.

“The President wanted to go in a different direction. A president has a right to hit a reset button. I think it’s a good time to hit the reset button. I think he was right to hit the reset button,” Priebus said on CNN Friday evening.

But a new twist seems to be unfolding in this heated political drama. On Monday, The Mooch was removed as the White House communications director after serving only 10 days in his new position. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced on Monday that Scaramucci will no longer serve as the communications director. “Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give Chief of Staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best,” Sanders said in a statement.

It is not known if Scaramucci will be given another position in the White House or leave completely. But one thing is for sure: despite President Trump’s tweet before 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning, stating, “No WH chaos!,” the White House is definitely chaotic.
