Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t give time for meeting to Muslim Personal Law board to discuss triple Talaq issue. AIMPLB executive council member Maulana Syed Khalil-ur-Rahman Sajjad Nomani told this in a press meet and said time for the meeting was sought through a letter but no reply has been given. He said Muslim Personal Law Board had called an emergency meeting in Lucknow it was decided that representation would be made with the prime minister but unfortunately, the prime minister didn’t give time to board members.
He slammed the triple talaq bill proposed by the BJP-led NDA government and described it as an attempt to ban the institution of talaq itself. He said the bill is against the Constitution and fundamental rights.
HT has quoted him as saying “It is generally publicised that this bill is presented to stop triple talaq. But, the fact is, if you read the bill, it is to ban the entire institution of talaq.” “The flaws in it, because of them, it (the bill) is against the Constitution of India, judgements of the Supreme Court, women and children rights and fundamental rights. Those flaws be removed,” he added.
According to its spokesman, the AIMPLB is not opposed to the bill but wanted the flaws removed.
Describing it as a “very wrong” type of law, Maulana Nomani said, “even if the wife says he (her husband) has not given divorce and that it was a wrong report (on the matter), police will say you have to prove that in court and that we have to arrest. This is a strange legislation. That means the truth is, it makes us feel ashamed not just as a Muslim but as a citizen of this country.”
Maulana Nomani asserted that the board would exercise all the democratic options regarding the bill.
