The husband of Ishrat Jahan, 31, one of the five petitioners against triple talaq in the Supreme Court, has said he never divorced her using triple talaq. Murtaza Ansari alleged that Jahan lied that she was given instant triple talaq on phone from Dubai in April 2014.
He alleged that the lady used the Islamic practice as a shield to protect herself from being socially stagmatised. He added if she changes herself and agrees to stay at his home in Bihar, then even now he would be ready to live with her.
Without clearly hinting at her illicit relation, Ansari said he would not allow her to live in Howrah (West Bengal) where she had some “personal preference” which he did not like.
Following the Supreme Court striking down the ‘talaq-e biddat’ (instant triple divorce) practice on August 22 last year and the Centre coming up with the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which criminalises instant triple talaq and prescribes a jail term of three years for violators, Ishrat – the mother of two – joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was “assisting her in the legal battle for a long time”.
The Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) passed the controversial legislation, which got stuck in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) after a strong opposition.
After the lower house cleared the proposed law, Ishrat – who joined the BJP along with her lawyer in Howrah – credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with making a “revolutionaey law”.
“Modiji made a revolutionary law in the interest of victims,” she was quoted as saying.
The saffron party is using her these days in campaigning for the Lok Sabha by-election that will take place on January 29 in Muslim-dominated Uluberia constituency in Howrah.
