Abu Dhabi: As India celebrates its 75th year of Independence, Mujeeb Jaihoon, the UAE-based Indian writer, has joined his country’s euphoric celebrations by directing an epic Malayalam song video titled, Umar Qazi : The Poet. The Patriot.

The song is performed by Kerala’s prominent Sufi vocalist Sameer Binsi (of recent Malayalam blockbuster fame, Malik) along with singers Imam Majboor and Mithulesh. The patriotic music video includes the sketches by Dubai-based artist Shaf Beypore visualized in motion graphics.

Umar Qazi (1763 – 1857), the 18th-century freedom fighter who is widely acclaimed as the forerunner of the Non taxation movement in Indian freedom struggle, was born in the coastal town of Ponnani in Kerala. He was an eminent poet and social reformer as well as a vocal opponent of the British colonial rule in India. He is also credited with composing several eulogies in Arabic.

“While there are several other prominent figures in the Indian freedom struggle, I could easily relate to Umar Qazi for two reasons: my love of poetry and his origin from my hometown”, said Jaihoon, a tech-savvy blogger who has authored nine books. He hopes that his directorial debut will help the young Kerala generation to connect with their cultural legacy in a year that also witnesses the Centenary celebrations of the Malabar Revolt (1921). He also observed that the year of Qazi’s death coincides incredibly with the 1857 Rebellion, considered as India’s first major uprising against British colonialism.

Industry analysts are hopeful that art lovers from Kerala can expect a new chapter as music production enters a zone that has not been tread so far. The epic song is available across major social media platforms including Youtube, Facebook and Instagram.
